The History of Press-On Nails

The delicacy of fingertips carries the aesthetic changes of the times. Press-on nails are not exclusive to modern times; their development history spans thousands of years. In China, from a symbol of status for ancient nobles to a fashion item that now enters ordinary people's homes, every step is engraved with people's pursuit of beauty and industrial innovation, eventually growing into an emerging industry with an annual output value exceeding 10 billion yuan.

The embryonic form of press-on nails can be traced back to ancient times, with its earliest form originating from practical needs. During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, people made "claw covers" from hard materials such as animal bones and horns to wear on their fingertips to protect them from being scratched by strings. Noble women in the Han Dynasty decorated their fingertips with gold nail guards, which had both protective functions and the role of showing status. In the Qing Dynasty, noble women prevailed in growing long nails, and the finger guards made of bamboo tubes and reeds were gradually replaced by styles inlaid with gold, silver and gemstones, becoming an intuitive embodiment of status and position. This was the most primitive form of press-on nails, with the core combination of practicality and hierarchical symbol.

The modern sense of press-on nails originated in Japan in the 1980s. Initially used as auxiliary props for stage makeup and Cosplay, they had single styles and rough craftsmanship, and were only used for temporary decoration. In 2006, the concept of press-on nails was introduced into China, but due to the limitations of material technology and consumption concepts, the market scale was extremely small, and it only spread in a niche circle. At this time, press-on nails still had not got rid of the positioning of "temporary decoration".

2018 became a key turning point for the press-on nail industry. With the rise of "she economy", consumers' demand for convenience and diversity of manicure increased. Press-on nails stood out with the advantages of reusable wear, no damage to natural nails and high cost performance. Taking advantage of its crystal industry, Donghai County in Jiangsu Province was the first to smell the business opportunity, transforming from providing crystal scraps to Yiwu merchants to focusing on the hand-made press-on nail field, opening the prelude to large-scale industrial development.

After 2019, the press-on nail industry entered a period of rapid development. Donghai County in China gradually formed a complete industrial chain of "raw material production - product design - production - sales", with nearly 50,000 practitioners. Its products account for 70% of the national market share and are sold to more than 30 countries and regions through cross-border e-commerce. The rise of live e-commerce has also become a catalyst. The reading volume of related topics on social media has reached 4.9 billion person-times, promoting press-on nails from offline to online and becoming a "new top star" in the beauty track.

Today, the press-on nail industry has transformed from low-price competition to high-end, branding and customization. Designers integrate oriental aesthetics and intangible cultural heritage techniques into their designs, launching characteristic styles such as blue and white porcelain and enamel, and some high-end customized styles are expensive. At the same time, the industry is gradually standardized. Donghai County has established an industry association and formulated standards, and various regions have introduced policies to support enterprise innovation, forming three major industrial clusters in Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangsu.

From an exclusive accessory for ancient nobles to a fingertip fashion for modern people, from a simple protective tool to a cultural and creative product carrying cultural connotation, the development history of press-on nails is not only a history of aesthetic iteration, but also a history of industrial innovation. In the future, with the continuous upgrading of craftsmanship and in-depth integration of culture, this small nail piece will surely shine more brightly in the tide of fingertip economy.
